Housing
issue
A core piece of the American Dream has always been owning a home. But with corporate investors, so-called “investment” properties, and a lack of new construction, it has become increasingly difficult to even find homes to buy. Add in out-of-control rent increases, and that dream is slipping further and further away.
But more can be done.
I would start by banning large corporations from sweeping up single-family homes. I would fight for “right of first refusal” laws, allowing renters of single-family homes the first opportunity to purchase their homes if a landlord decides to sell.
I want to cap the rate at which landlords can increase rents, strengthen renters’ union laws, and create a clear, accessible pathway for tenants to organize.
Finally, I want to incentivize home builders to construct homes that meet the actual needs of the average Ohioan, rather than focusing solely on so-called “luxury” housing.
We can create a housing market that works for the people of this state.
